Sonam Lhosar

Sonam Lhosar is a culturally significant festival celebrated by the Tamang community in Nepal and other minority ethnic groups in the Himalayan region. It marks the commencement of the Tamang New Year and is observed as a joyous occasion filled with cultural customs and festivities. Sonam Lhosar symbolizes the initiation of a new year for the Tamang people and is celebrated as a time of rejuvenation and fresh beginnings. The term "Sonam" specifically pertains to the Tamang community in Nepal, while "Lhosar" translates to "New Year" in their language. The festival adheres to the Bikram Sambat Nepali calendar and typically falls in the month of Magh, corresponding to January in the Gregorian calendar. It takes place during the Magh Shukla Paksha, which is the bright lunar fortnight of the month. While the Tamang community is the primary group that celebrates Sonam Lhosar, other minority ethnic groups in the Himalayan region, such as the Yolmo, Dura, Thakalis of Mustang, Dolpalis, and Sinsas from Sankhuwasabha, also partake in this festival.
